The Korsakov Port is of paramount importance for the economic development of the Sakhalin Province, acting as a linking element between the mainland and the island. The Korsakov Port is one of the largest ports of the Far Eastern basin with year-round navigation.

The operations of Korsakov Marine Trade Port, JSC are strategically important for the region, since it handles up to 80% of the island freight traffic. The characteristics of handled goods allow saying that the Port actually performs the food and energy security function for the region. At the same time the port is a systemic enterprise for Korsakov as it provides approximately 600 jobs.

The Korsakov Port has the status of an international port and is a border inspection post. It provides continuous line traffic service with South Korea, Vladivostok, the western coast of the USA and Asia-Pacific countries. There is a functioning cargo-and-passenger line to the Kuril Islands.

In 2017 Korsakov Marine Trade Port was granted the residential status of the Free Port of Vladivostok. Today the Korsakov Port is engaged in major investment projects for the total amount of 5.0 bln of roubles, including projects implemented on behalf of the Governor of the Sakhalin Province.

The most prominent of them are the reconstruction of off-shore structures, complete technical upgrade of crane machinery in the loading areas; construction of a new cargo-and-passenger ferry for the Korsakov-Vladivostok line; purchase of tagging and transshipment machinery. The declared investment projects in the Sakhalin Province result in plans to create over 150 new jobs, provision of conditions for the growth of population, development of production, social and travel infrastructure, improvement of living standards, development of traditional types of activity, creation of new high-tech manufactures, leverage of economic relations with Asia-Pacific countries.

Everything mentioned above speaks of undeniable advantages of the Korsakov Port for oil-and-gas industry projects, including the proximity to major development areas reducing the passage time of vessels to 24 hours as compared to the ports on the western coast of Sakhalin; sufficient depths to serve shelf project vessels; well-proven operational support base for oil-and-gas projects; construction of a refuge harbor by 2018; sufficient spaces with developed infrastructure.
