General Description of the Korsakov Port and its Location


Location: Russia, Sakhalin Province, Sakhalin Island, Korsakov District, Aniva Bay, Korsakov (46°37’ N, 142°45’ E).

The Korsakov Seaport is located on the southern cost of Sakhalin in Aniva Bay, to the north from Tomari-Aniva Cape. It includes the territory of the commercial seaport (Northern Pier, Southern Pier, Inner Harbor), Ozyorsky Marine Terminal specializing on a comprehensive servicing of fishing fleet vessels, and Pogranichnoye Oil Loading Terminal.

The water area of the Port is 65,5 sq. km. Total number of berths: 30 with total length of 2,737 ths of meters. The throughput capacity of cargo terminals exceeds 2 million tons per year, passenger terminals – 37 ths passengers annually. Maximum dimensions of vessels calling the Korsakov Seaport: draft – 17.5 m; length – 300 m. Area of indoor storage sites: 12.69 ths sq.m; area of outdoor storage sites: 37.19 ths sq.m. The port is ice-free with year-round navigation.

The Korsakov Seaport is one of the largest ice-free ports in the Far Eastern basin, it is called the sea gates to Sakhalin. The port is connected by regular lines to the Vladivostok Port, the ports of Japan, Korea, and locations on the Kuril Islands. It has the status of an international port with a permanent border control check-point.

One of the largest operators of the marine trade port and a stevedoring company is Korsakov Marine Trade Port, Joint-Stock Company (KMTP, JSC). Acting on a long-term leasehold basis, KMTP, JSC manages the off-shore structures – the mooring berths of the Southern and Northern loading areas. Land plots, including buildings and facilities adjacent to the above mentioned off-shore structures, are owned by KMTP, JSC.

KMTP, JSC is licensed to handle hazardous cargo of classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 according to the IMDG Code classification.

In terms of territory KMTP, JSC is divided into three transportation facilities – the Southern area, the Northern area, and the Central boot basin with adjacent territories.

The Central boot basin is a harbor for medium range vessels and small crafts; it is used as a holding anchorage and for repairs, as well as for bunkering.

The Southern area (off-shore structures) with total area of 20,698 sq.m is located at the address: 10/2, Portovaya Street, Korsakov, Sakhalin Province

The off-shore structure of the Southern terminal includes berths No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 with total length of 521 line meters, connected to the shore with a motor road and railway bridge 239 meters long. The width of the berths is 36.6 m with allowable draft from 5.0 to 7.5 meters. The installation of fendering systems will allow the mooring of vessels with 7.9 m load draft.

A land plot with total area of 56,421 sq.m adjoins the off-shore structure. It is located at the address: 10/1 - 10/3, Portovaya Street, Korsakov, Sakhalin Province. The land plot houses administrative and auxiliary buildings and structures. The area of outdoor territories is about 39,000 sq.m, indoor storage facilities – 6,500 sq.m.

The Northern area (off-shore structures) with total area of 42,800 sq.m is located at the address: 19a, Severnaya Street, Korsakov, Sakhalin Province. The structure includes 8 berths capable of accepting vessels with the load draft from 4.5 m to 8.0 m.

All KMTP, JSC’s berths are multi-purpose and cross-functional; they are fitted with 16 overhead gantry cranes “Kondor” and “Albatros” with lifting capacity from 10 t to 60 t, and up to 60 t when working tandem.

Basic types of activity for KMTP, JSC include: handling operations with all types of cargoes; servicing of Russian and foreign vessels; servicing of passengers arriving/departing with a sea transport; forwarding services; cargo storage services for individuals and companies.

The handled cargoes include bulk, loose, chemical materials, package cargoes, cars, large-size and oil-and-gas equipment, tubulars, construction materials, metals – all in all over 30 types.

The optimal annual volume of handled cargo in the port is 2,000 ths. tons. The maximum handling capacity of the port is up to 5,000 tons of various cargoes.

Due to shelf projects, the territory of the Korsakov Port houses shore bases and warehouse facilities of Russian and foreign oil-and-gas operators of the Sakhalin 1-3 projects.

Currently the territory of KMTP, JSC and adjacent areas hold shore bases and warehouse terminals of such companies like Schlumberger, Parker Drilling, Unicon, Swire Oilfield Services, KСA Deutag, etc.

Within their premises and in the port service companies gather, prepare and complete cargoes and materials to ensure all required works on offshore drilling and producing platforms.
